The Little Things

On the first day of school, a simple reminder for all of us as we begin a new year to be mindful of the little things:

Take a moment to try to recognize and enjoy them, whether they are:

  • a kindness that someone offered you (or someone else) today,
  • inspiration or help from a mentor, teacher or a colleague,
  • the way that a person treats you every day that makes your day worthwhile,
  • the way that someone notices, recognizes and cares about what you do
  • or something else that matters to you personally,

...because one day you will likely look back on those little things
and realize that they were actually the big things all along.

Let someone know that they mattered to you today and that they make a difference.
Let someone know that you notice what they do, how they work or how they treat others (or you).

Whatever it is that you observed, you appreciate or admire about them, share it.  Specifically.
You can do it in a note, an e-mail, a text or a quick conversation.  The method doesn't matter.

Try it.
Every.  Single.  Day.

You have 1440 minutes in a day.  Use one of them to make someone else's day.
I guarantee that it will make your day as well.
Your weeks and months and your entire school year will also feel so much better as that time moves along so rapidly between now and June.

Practicing gratefulness and appreciation also makes many more positive memories and synaptic connections in your brain between what you and your colleagues learn and experience together, and over time, that creates a sense of happiness and belonging between and among you when it begins to spread or when you think about your experiences here at work.

Try it and see. I've done it for years, so I know how it can change your life and the lives of others as well in just 60 seconds a day.  Isn't making positive changes for yourself and others what life is all about?
